Onyx (= onyx) derives from an ancient Greek word meaning “claw.” The name comes from the resemblance between the black-and-white banding of onyx and the marks left when something is scratched with a claw. Originally, it referred to stones with white streaks, but after various twists and turns, in Japan it has come to commonly mean jet-black chalcedony, now often called black onyx (sometimes shortened to simply onyx).
